FAQ - Picture Lights

Q: What size light should I get for the picture I would like to illuminate?

A: To provide proper lighting coverage, the length of the picture light shade should be half of the width of the image it is illuminating.

Q:What do the different finishes look like?

A:There are several finishes available for most lighting choices. Satin Nickel, Polished Brass, Chrome, Weathered Brass, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Gold, Gold Wrinkle, Bronze Pewter, Satin Brass, Statuary Bronze, Mahogany Bronze and Antique Brass are the primary finishes. Some picture lights come in other finishes but they are listed along with the product features. Click the following link to see a complete listing of the picture light finishes .

Q:How long do LED light bulbs last?

A: An LED Array will last up to 100,000 hours before needing to be replaced, making them virtually maintenance free.

Q: What type of finish should I get for my picture light?

A: It really depends upon your personal taste, you may wish to select a finish that matches your picture frame, or you may wish to select a finish that allows the picture light to stand on its own or is in line with the decor of the room.

Q: Is there any way to eliminate the cord?

A: We have found several ways to address the cord:

1) Install a recessed outlet (some people call this a "clock outlet" directly behind the artwork. Then, make sure that the lamp is not plugged in and cut the cord to right length and attach a flat snap-on plug (available at our "accessories" navigation menu). Ideally you will connect this to a dimmer switch on the wall.

2) Use cord covers - they can make the appearance of the cord practically disappear and are easy to install. They can be purchased at home improvement stores.

3) Paint the cord to match the color of the wall. It will blend in nicely and be much less noticeable.

4) Place plants, furniture, display tables or other decor in a position to hide most of the cord.

5) Use an inuated staple to directly attach the cord to the baseboard. This keeps the cord straight and dramatically improves its appearance.

6) Consider using a battery powered picture light. We have several models of battery powered picture lights available to choose from. The lights will provide attractive minimum light and will last up to 45 hours.

Q: How do you install a Picture Light?

A: All of the lights featured in our store come with complete mounting hardware and may be attached to either the picture frame or directly to the wall. The only tools required are a screw driver and something to start a screw-hole, such as a small nail or awl.

Q: What types of bulbs are used in picture lights?

A: Each of the items displayed in the store have the bulb specifications listed in the product details. Our recommendation for bulbs is to use frosted bulbs if the reflector on the picture light is smooth and to use a clear bulb if the reflector is pebbled. The reason for this is that a clear bulb with a smooth reflector will produce unnecessary reflections on the artwork. As always, a dimmer switch is an effective way to adjust the amount of light on your artwork.
